Quabaug Valley Asparagus & Flower Festival
Saturday, May 18 (Rain date May 19), 10-5, on the West Brookfield Town Common, at the intersection of Routes 9 and 67.  Celebrate the arrival of spring with unique food and flowers, antiques and art and entertainment on the historic Olde Quabaug Plantation town common.  Diedrick Leetouwer, the Dutch consul to the states of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, planted nearby the first Asparagus, a member of the lily family, in 1795.  He lived in West Brookfield with his wife and young daughter and subsequently died here.  This second annual festival, will feature home grown and home made agricultural products in the tradition of the Central Mass Fresh “Buy Locally Grown” initiative.  Enjoy folk music and watch children dance around the Maypole.  Great food and family fun.  For more information, contact Dave Cameron, 508-867-9281, or www.sawmannengland@aol.com.

The Historic Salem Cross Inn Offers Several Springtime Specials
Maple Gatherings – Hundreds of years ago, in the fields of the Salem Cross Inn, the Quaboag Indians flourished.  Their first sign of spring was not the return of the robin, but the flow of sweet sap from the maple tree.  As time passed, the Indians shared their coveted secret of sugar making with the New England colonists.  Unique to this region, maple syrup is one of New England’s gifts to the world.  Join us in exploring the possibilities of maple.  Fireplace Feasts – Relax by the fire and lend a hand as dinner is prepared for you in old colonial style.  Stir the chowder as it bubbles in our cast iron cauldron.  See your prime rib roasted “to a turn”.  Beware the brimming bowl of freshly whipped cream – the perfect compliment to New England’s Best Apple Pie.  Summer Herb Sampler – Begin in the garden with a talk of the history and taste of herbs.  Then gather on the lawn where our chef will share tips and techniques of cooking with fresh herbs selected from the garden.  After whetting your appetite, we’ll move inside where the evening’s meal will be served combining the fresh flavors from our summer garden.  Call 508-867-8337 for more information or www.salemcrossinn.com.

Hyland Orchard and Brewery
